Engineer Uses Personal Time to Deliver Water Supply to Village

Patrick Goimba, an engineer from Santos Wash, chose to spend part of his annual leave working on a community project in his home area of Waknam in the Western Highlands. During his 28-day break, he devoted 10 days to designing and building a water catchment system that now supplies clean water to over a hundred local homes and the health centre.

The system—comprising a sediment tank, a long pipeline and a large storage tank—was tailored for the region’s tough terrain. It also supports a tree nursery run by Mul Conservation Inc, which focuses on climate resilience, through a program funded by New Zealand and managed by the UNDP.

Villagers helped with physically demanding tasks like hauling materials across rough ground. To ensure the system’s sustainability, Goimba established a local committee to care for the infrastructure. He intends to return during his next holiday to install a small hydroelectric generator to provide electricity to the community.
